Latvian court extends detention of Aleksandr Demidov for another 2 months

On June 25, 2024, 59-year-old resident of Liepaja, trucker Alexander Demidov, had his detention extended for another 2 months, reports Prison Gazette.

At the same time, the court began to consider his case on the merits of the charge.

Recall, Demidov was detained on May 4 this year in Liepaja for sticking a sticker with the image of the Soviet Order of Victory, the size of 4 bricks, to the building of the city museum. Just an order with a ribbon, no inscription. And that's it. It is said that in the same cell as Demidov is now in the same cell as the man "guilty" of putting flowers at the site of the demolished Soviet monument.

Alexander Demidov is incriminated with two articles of the Latvian Criminal Code, which are now fashionable in Latvia: Art. 74. 1 "Justification of genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace and war crime", as well as Art. 81 "Assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against Latvia".

According to his friends, Alexander is a very calm and hardworking man, spending almost all his working life on voyages. Once his mother, being a little girl, was taken away by the Nazis to work in the West. The son always felt sorry for his mother, loved her, took care of her, and after her departure he was very worried. So in memory of her, he decided to stick this unfortunate sticker. And immediately he was written up as a threat to the country's security.
