The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that Professor Aleksandr Gaponenko has become another victim of Latvia's Russophobic regime.
At a briefing in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Riga was trying to intimidate the Russian-speaking population of its country by using such methods.
According to her, Latvia's actions contradict the obligations assumed under the main international human rights treaties.
Maria Zakharova emphasized that Russia would closely follow the fate of Alexander Gaponenko and do everything possible to protect his rights.
Recall that human rights activist Alexander Gaponenko was detained in Latvia and imprisoned for two months. The criminal case was initiated after his speech at the round table “Ethnocide of Russian compatriots in the Baltic States”, organized by the Institute of CIS countries. The speech was held in an online format.
The Latvian special services brought charges against Alexander Gaponenko of “inciting national discord and enmity”, as well as “assisting the activities of a foreign state against Latvia”.
