The Riga District Court passed a sentence on a 72-year-old citizen of the Russian Federation, a former officer of the Soviet Army, whose personal details have not been disclosed. He was found guilty of espionage in favor of Russia and sentenced to eight years in prison.
According to the investigation, the man collected information on political processes in Latvia, as well as on critical military and civilian infrastructure in the area of Riga airport. In addition, he investigated the territory adjacent to the 17th Zemessardze Battalion.
The data collected is believed to have been transmitted personally to the Russian intelligence representative in Kaliningrad. The exact amount of information transmitted is difficult to establish, as the defendant's activities continued for a long time and he delivered the information personally when he came to Russia.
During the search in his garage, officers of the State Security Service (SGB) found explosives - one hexogen briquette weighing 975 grams and four TNT briquettes with a total mass of 759.4 grams, as well as 136 cartridges.
The man was detained on December 20, 2023, two days after the initiation of criminal proceedings - on December 18. Already in May 2024, the case was transferred to the prosecutor's office.
