The case of Estonian political prisoner Aivo Peterson was considered at a UN hearing

The Swiss human rights organization Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTi) held a side event at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council to draw attention to the case of Aivo Peterson, a prominent political activist from Estonia who is being persecuted for his legitimate and peaceful activities.

The hearing emphasized that Estonian government authorities use measures designed to protect state security to suppress democratic expression and political activism. This includes arbitrary detentions, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and other forms of pressure on activists and opposition groups, contrary to international human rights standards.

JPTi urges the UN to take immediate action to stop these repressive practices and ensure that Aivo Peterson's rights are protected.

As a reminder, JPTi previously sent a detailed complaint to the six special mandate holders of the UN Human Rights Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Estonia to the UN Office in Geneva, Ria Salsa-Audiffren, and called for immediate measures to stop political persecution and abuse of state security legislation in Estonia. The complaint is supported by a detailed legal analysis by international law professor Daue Korff.
