On January 5, 2024, it became known about the arrest of the chairman of the Russian community of Poltava region and publicist Viktor Shestakov by the Security Service of Ukraine in Poltava.
The online publication Poltavshchina, citing the SBU press service, reported that "an agent of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service who was conducting information sabotage against Ukraine was detained in Poltava". At the same time, the "sabotage" refers to "preparation of more than 60 publications for the Russian Internet publications One Motherland and the Strategic Culture Foundation".
Based on its "own sources", Poltavshchyna reported that the "Russian agent" detained by the SBU was Viktor Shestakov. The photos published by the publication show SBU officers and the detainee in handcuffs with hidden faces, as well as a close-up photo of the detainee.
Viktor Shestakov is charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and faces life imprisonment.
