On September 11, 2024, an appeal in the case of Jelena Kreile was heard remotely in the Latvian city of Valmiera, according to independent journalist Alla Berezovskaia. Recall that last year the court of first instance sentenced her to 1 year of suspended imprisonment for the poster with the inscription “RUSSIA, I'm WITH YOU!”. Today, the prosecutor's appeal was satisfied and Kreile's sentence was changed: now she must serve a real term of 1 year in prison.
In addition, in the second criminal case, related to installations in the windows of her apartment with the Russian flag, Elena was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. An appeal in this case has not yet been considered.
Kreile is currently being held in Ilgucieme Women's Prison on a third case, again related to her creative installations, which have displeased vigilant Latvian citizens who do not share her views.
Interestingly, recent remarks by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics about too lenient sentences for dissidents may indicate that the situation for Jelena may worsen.
