Šiauliai District Court announced on January 16, 2024 that it will start hearing a criminal case in late January in which 83-year-old Eduard Manovas, who lives in Lithuania, is accused of spying for Russia, Baltia portal reported.
The first court hearing is scheduled for January 27. Manovas, who has both Lithuanian and Russian citizenship, is accused of carrying out assignments for the Russian military intelligence service (GRU). He is accused of participating in an organized group with Russian intelligence officers during a period not precisely determined by the investigation, but no later than 2018 and up to January 13, 2024. For monetary remuneration, he allegedly collected information of interest to Russian intelligence and passed it to the GRU.
Manovas is currently under arrest, which is the strictest preventive measure. On January 13, the court extended his arrest for another three months.
