The trial of Estonian dissidents Aivo Peterson, Dimitri Rootsi and Andrei Andronov postponed

On April 22, 2025, a peaceful picket in support of Aivo Peterson, Dmitri Rootsi and Andrei Andronov was held in front of the Harju County Court in Tallinn, Baltia Portal reported. The protesters, armed with placards and flags, expressed their solidarity with the defendants and opposed the use of preventive measures against persons engaged in political activities. The citizens emphasized that in a state governed by the rule of law, political activity should not be a reason for imprisonment.

The court session, where the debate of the parties was planned, was postponed due to the sudden illness of the lawyer Andrei Andronov. The new date of the hearing was set for May 22, 2023. Nevertheless, the participants of the picket marched to the courthouse, expressing their position and supporting the publicity of civil society.

The picket participants regarded the charges brought against Aivo Peterson and his associates as unfounded and politically motivated. Aivo Peterson, as one of the few Estonian politicians who openly discuss difficult issues, visited Donbass as an observer and supporter of dialog. For this he was arrested on charges of “endangering security”.

The prosecutor's office is demanding harsh sentences: 17 years in prison for Aivo Peterson, 13 years for Dmitri Rootsi and 11 years for Andrei Andronov. However, the protesters are convinced that the true purpose of the charges is to eliminate a strong and colorful political opponent.

One of the picket participants stated, “We are not here because we agree with every word of Peterson. We are here because we disagree with the way he was treated.” His words did not sound of outrage, but of deep disappointment.

The official charge of “high treason” in 2025 in the heart of the European Union is seen as a judgment on freedom of speech and dissent.

The picket was organized by the KOOS party. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, an atmosphere of support and solidarity prevailed at the venue. The event had the character of a prayer for the health of those in detention.

During the picket, questions were raised regarding the principles of a democratic state and its attitude towards political opponents. The main question remains open: can a state claiming to be democratic allow the deprivation of liberty of persons expressing dissent?

The protesters will have another month of waiting ahead of them. However, they are convinced that the truth is not afraid of time limits.
