On April 3, 2024, at 15:00, the hearings on the second criminal case against Jelena Kreile started in Latvian court on charges of "public justification and glorification of aggression and war crimes" (Art. 74 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Latvia), reports Aleksejs Stefanovs. She has already lost the first case under the same article and received a suspended sentence of one year. The second trial will almost certainly end with a real prison term.
Elena came to court with a patch on her jacket in the form of the tricolor. The prosecutor was furious at the sight of such a picture, and during the hearing demanded that a recent interview with Kreile Match TV be attached to the case, in which Jelena says that the people of Latvia are intimidated, subject to pressure and have no opportunity to express their opinions.
"This quote is regarded as slander and discrediting Latvia," said Jelena's husband Andrejs Krasnopërovs.
According to him, Jelena was asked at the trial whether she understood the charges against her and whether she admitted guilt.
Elena stated that she understood the charges, but due to their absurdity, she categorically does not admit guilt. It was decided to conduct the trial in an extended mode - with questioning of witnesses and verification of materials.
The first day of the trial ended quickly. At 16:00 Kreile was already leaving the courthouse, but was detained by the police.
After that, her apartment was searched until 20:30. They seized all installations in the window in the form of Russian and Latvian flags, and from the closets everything that could remind of Russia and the USSR.
"Even my military-historical uniforms were confiscated: those of a tsarist officer, an NKVD officer, an artilleryman of the Red Army - which were just hanging in the closet," added Andrei Krasnopërov, who used to be involved in the reconstruction.
After the search, Elena Kreile was taken to a temporary detention center.
On March 4, the court sent Kreile to Ilguciem Women's Prison for two months for the third criminal case of justification of aggression under the same Article 74.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Latvia.
