Prisoners of conscience

Valentin Rozhentsov

On November 5, 2024, the Kurzeme Court in Latvia sentenced journalist Valentin Rozhentsov in the sweeping case of “14 journalists”. He was accused of violating EU sanctions imposed on the director general of Russia Today Dmitry Kiselyov, for working for the media group between 2016 and 2019.

The court sentenced Valentin Rozhentsov to two years in prison. He became the first journalist to receive a real prison sentence. Previously, the authors of the portals Sputnik Latvia and Baltnews were punished differently, although quite severely.
