The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has refused to initiate proceedings on three complaints filed by Jelena Kreile, a Latvian housewife charged under Article 74.1 (“justification of aggression, war crimes”) for displaying peace symbols in the window of her own home, the Baltic portal reported. Kreile's only “fault” was her open support for peaceful dialog between Russia and Latvia.
In her complaints Kreile pointed to illegal actions of law enforcement agencies, including arrest, search of her apartment and detention.
The criminal cases were triggered by Russian tricolors, the inscription “Putin is my friend”, a Christmas tree toy in the form of a red star, a poster “I am a Russian-Latvian Soviet man” and other similar materials placed in the window of her house.
In the first case, Elena Kreile was sentenced to one year in prison, in the second case to three years in prison (an appeal is pending), and in the third case to another year in prison.
Kreile has been imprisoned in Riga Ilgucieme Women's Prison since April 2024.
