Latvian State Security Service detained human rights defender Aleksandrs Gaponenko

On February 13, 2025, the Latvian State Security Service (SSS) detained a well-known public figure and human rights activist Aleksandrs Gaponenko, according to a photo published by the SSS in the social network “X”. Procedural actions were carried out at the detainee's place of residence, Baltija portal reported.

Without naming the detainee, the SGB said that he was detained in connection with statements made at a public discussion in Moscow, which, in the opinion of law enforcement agencies, pose a threat to Latvia's national security.

On 4 February 2025 in Moscow, the organization “Institute of CIS Countries” organized a public discussion entitled “Ethnocide of Russian compatriots in the Baltic States”. Having analyzed the statements made at the conference, the SGB opened a criminal case on suspicion of committing crimes under Articles 81.1 and 78 of the Criminal Law: promoting Russian activities against Latvia and inciting national discord and enmity.

The SGB promises to provide additional information about the progress of the investigation in accordance with the established procedure.
