Latvian parliamentary candidate Tukhbatova to stand trial for espionage in favor of Russia

On April 4, 2024, the court started hearing a criminal case in which Inga Tukhbatova, a candidate for the 14th Parliament/Seima Inga Tukhbatova, is accused of illegally collecting and transmitting information to Russian intelligence through another person, Baltia Portal reported. The criminal law for espionage provides for imprisonment from one to ten years.

According to the charge, she received and transmitted information concerning both everyday life in Latvia and Latvia's defense and security system in general.

The prosecutor's office does not provide details about the content of the collected information.

Latvian media connect Tukhbatova's criminal case with the case of the organization "Baltic Antifascists", against which, on November 28, 2022, the State Security Service initiated criminal proceedings. According to the special service, "Baltic Antifascists" purposefully and systematically used channels in Telegram for various actions against the interests of Latvia's national security.

We shall remind you that the Prosecutor's Office in the case of "Baltic Antifascists" brought charges against six residents of Latvia. Three of the accused are wanted. In addition, it was decided to prosecute two more people for espionage, whose cases were allocated in a separate proceeding.

Inga Tukhbatova ran for the 2022 elections on the list of the "To Each and Every One" party headed by Aldis Gobzems.
