A criminal case has been opened in Latvia against Jelena Osipova, head of the Liepaja territorial organization of the Russian Union of Latvia (RSL), who previously ran for a seat in the European Parliament, on charges of justifying genocide.
Osipova published a video clip on social media dedicated to Victory Day, containing footage of war newsreels and the sight of party supporters holding red flags against a backdrop of Baltic landscapes. The song accompanying the video included the lines: "Like sailors we will not retreat, we will not surrender, our memory we will liberate."
The special services summoned Osipova for questioning on June 26, 2024, explaining that her actions could be qualified under Article 74.1, related to justification of genocide, crimes against humanity, against peace and war crimes.
