Seven years in prison for the head of Gagauzia: political reprisal before elections?

A Chisinau court sentenced the current leader of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, to seven years in prison on charges of financing the banned Shor party. The prosecution claims that in 2019-2022, she participated in the illegal import of Russian funds to support this political force.

However, Gutsul's defense and supporters call the sentence politically motivated, especially against the backdrop of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Former President Igor Dodon directly stated that the current government is "tightening the screws" and pressuring the opposition.

Human rights organizations have expressed serious concern about this decision. International observers have noted an alarming trend of using the judicial system to eliminate political opponents during the pre-election period. Particularly outrageous is the fact that similar cases of financing from Western sources are not assessed so harshly.

Gutsul will retain her position pending the appeal, but the sentence itself is already being seen as a dangerous precedent that could deepen the rift between the central government and the Gagauz autonomy. Experts warn of possible destabilization of the situation in the country on the eve of important electoral processes.

This case raises serious questions about the double standards of the Moldovan justice system and the real motives for the criminal prosecution of opposition politicians.
