Human rights activist Sergei Seredenko may be released from an Estonian prison on parole
At the end of last week the Viru county court considered the possibility of early release from prison of the well-known human rights activist Siarhei Seredenko, who was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for anti-state activities, the Baltic portal reported.
According to Rus.ERR, the prosecutor's office was against the early release, while the prison supported the petition. In case of release, electronic surveillance will be applied to Sergei Seredenko.
“A decision on the motion will be issued no later than November 14 through the court clerk's office,” Viru County Court spokeswoman Kristi Ehrlich told Rus.ERR on Monday.
Sergei Seredenko has been serving his sentence since March 3, 2021, when he was detained as a suspect.
According to the investigation, from 2009 until his detention, Sergei Seredenko knowingly maintained relations with seven persons who acted in the interests and on behalf of Russian state bodies.
On September 22, 2022, the Harju County Court sentenced him to five years and six months in prison. On December 19, the sentence was upheld by the Tallinn District Court. On January 17, 2023, a cassation appeal was filed against the District Court's decision. In March of the same year, it was admitted to proceedings, and on May 17 the State Court examined it in written proceedings. In June, it issued a final judgment upholding the conviction and the sentence imposed on Serhiy Seredenko.
