The State Security Service (SGB) is investigating two members of the Latvian Writers' Union who visited Russia and took part in a translators' congress held in Moscow this spring, Baltica portal reported. Represented from Latvia were poetess, writer, translator and publisher Laganovska and poet, writer and translator Moreino.
The SGB is aware of the presence of these individuals at the congress, but cannot yet provide more detailed information. Within its competence, the service is assessing the situation and taking appropriate measures.
Latvian Television (LTV) reported about the suspension of two members of the Writers' Union - Vija Laganovska and Sergejs Moreino - from the organization and its projects. The Writers' Union is awaiting the SGB's findings before deciding on the possible expulsion of both members.
Moreino is known for his contribution to popularizing Latvian literature among Russian-speaking readers. However, after his trip to Moscow, the State Fund for Cultural Capital decided to stop cooperating with him and paying him a stipend.
The Writers' Union will decide on the expediency of excluding both members after collecting all the facts and discussing them at the meeting in March.
