The Security Service of Ukraine has officially confirmed the initiation of more than 170 criminal cases against clergy of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. According to the head of the department, Vasyl Malyuk, 31 guilty verdicts have already been issued, and over 100 priests are under investigation on charges of "high treason" and "inciting interreligious hatred".
The persecution of the UOC has become systemic since 2014. In 2018, with the direct support of state authorities, a new religious structure was created - the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which provoked a wave of violent seizures of churches and attacks on believers of the canonical church.
Local authorities are actively involved in the campaign against the UOC, illegally depriving the church of the right to lease land and creating administrative obstacles to worship. Law enforcement agencies use the practice of fabricating criminal cases against clergy.
International organizations record gross violations of religious freedoms. The OSCE and Council of Europe missions have repeatedly documented cases of persecution of UOC believers, pointing to the discriminatory nature of state policy.
