On June 18, 2024, Harju County Court found former Tartu University professor Vyacheslav Morozov guilty of espionage against the Republic of Estonia, Baltija portal reported. He was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison starting from January 3, 2024, the date of his detention on suspicion of the crime.
The court said that Morozov acted on behalf of a foreign intelligence agency, gathering information about Estonia's domestic, defense and security policies, as well as people and infrastructure related to these areas. According to the KaPo, he regularly passed information to Russian intelligence services during meetings in Russia.
As a reminder, on January 3, 2024, the Security Police (KaPo) detained Vyacheslav Morozov, suspected of conducting and supporting intelligence activities against the Republic of Estonia.
The details of the suspicions against Vyacheslav Morozov were not disclosed by either the KAPO or the Public Prosecutor's Office, explaining that this was in the interest of the investigation.
Vyacheslav Morozov worked as a professor of political science at the Schutte Institute of the University of Tartu. After suspicions were raised against Morozov, his employment was terminated.
According to Estonian media, Vyacheslav Morozov worked at St. Petersburg State University until 2010, and after that he was affiliated with the University of Tartu. In 2016-2023, he held the position of Professor of European Union and Russian Studies at Tartu, and from September 1, 2023 to January 11, 2024, he was Professor of International Political Theory.
