A Ukrainian court has demanded that the Assumption Cathedral in Kanev, which is now owned by the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, be returned to the state, the Russian World reported citing the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
The XII century cathedral is an object of cultural heritage of national importance. The Prosecutor General's Office demanded to recognize the transfer of the cultural monument into the ownership of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as illegal.
Earlier, the land under the cathedral in Cherkassy was taken away from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The city park is going to be built on the territory where St. Michael's Cathedral is located. The court of appeal recognized as lawful the decision to deprive Cherkassy diocese of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the land plot, the area of which reaches almost nine hectares.
The land was taken away by the decision of the city council deputies back in the fall of 2022, Cherkasy District Administrative Court upheld this move.
