Lithuania launches pre-trial investigation into Švenčienienė's statements about the Miadininka tragedy

Lithuanian Prosecutor General Nida Grunskienė has launched a pre-trial investigation into the statements made public on July 31, 2024, by one of the founders of the liquidated "International Neighborhood Forum" Erika Švenčienienė about the mass murder of officials in Miadininkai in 1991, reports the Baltic portal.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched under an article of the Criminal Code, which stipulates liability for public approval, denial or gross humiliation of international crimes, crimes of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany.

According to the prosecutor's office, the investigation was launched in connection with false allegations about the Miadininka tragedy of July 31, 1991, published on Wednesday on Erika Palshauskaite-Schwenčienienienė's Facebook page.

"The Miadininka tragedy is a grim consequence of the activities of the Lithuanian security services. Many facts show that the murderers were from their own milieu. The truth is hidden, witnesses are silent," the woman wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

In June, Kaunas county police fined Švenčienienė 700 euros for posting an image of Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin on Facebook. On Tuesday, the Kaunas district court upheld the fine, rejecting the woman's complaint.
