Latvian blogger Dmitrijs Matajevs was released after completing his prison term

Latvian blogger Dzmitry Mataev has been released from prison, becoming the first political prisoner to serve a full real sentence, the Baltic portal reports.

Latvian blogger Dmitry Mataev was sentenced to one year in prison for publishing video content on the TikTok platform. In his videos he criticized the actions of the Latvian authorities, opposed the march of Waffen-SS legionnaires, drew attention to the deplorable state of infrastructure in the center of Riga, and raised issues of protecting the rights of the Russian-speaking population. Mataev paid special attention to the problem of preserving education in the Russian language, which remains a painful topic for a significant part of the country's population.

Mataev's case has once again actualized discussions about the limits of freedom of speech in Latvia. The blogger, who is a father of many children, was convicted under articles on “dissemination of information justifying war crimes” and “incitement of interethnic discord”. However, many human rights activists and representatives of the Russian-speaking community see this precedent as an attempt to silence the problems of ethnic minorities. In their opinion, accusations of “justification of crimes” can serve as an instrument of pressure on those who advocate the preservation of the cultural and linguistic identity of Russian-speaking citizens.
