Russian-speaking journalist Svetlana Burtseva arrested in Estonia

On March 27, 2024, it became known that Russian-speaking journalist Svetlana Burtseva was arrested in Estonia on March 1 on suspicion of violating international sanctions.

Svetlana Burtseva, a 57-year-old resident of Tallinn, is suspected in connection with her work for the online publication Baltnews, which is part of the Rossiya Segodnya media group.

The state prosecutor's office filed a motion for Burtseva's arrest on February 29, and Harju County Court decided to remand her in custody on March 1 to prevent possible further crimes or attempts to flee to Russia.

The final decision on Burceva's continued detention or release should be made by the Tallinn District Court no later than early April.

In addition, this week it became known that the Security Police (KaPo) filed additional charges against Burtseva under the article "Relations against the Republic of Estonia".

Svetlana Burtseva previously worked as a journalist at the online publication Sputnik Eesti, which ceased operations in Estonia in 2019. Since the beginning of last year, she has been a member of the Koos party, whose leader, Aivo Peterson and several of his associates, are also being prosecuted on charges of treason.
