Three articles of the Criminal Code of Latvia are incriminated, namely: part 2 of Article 78 (“Incitement of national, ethnic or racial hatred”), Article 80 (“Activities directed against state independence, sovereignty, territorial unity, state power”) and Article 81.1 (“Assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against the Republic of Latvia”).
On March 10, 2025, the Riga District Court considered the lawyer's appeal against the decision of the investigating judge of February 17, 2025, according to which a preventive measure in the form of detention was applied to him. The decision of the investigating court remained unchanged. However, in April, the Riga court decided to extend Gaponenko's detention for two months.
