A Lviv court has sentenced a local resident to seven years in prison for videos in which he expressed respect for Russian citizens and President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine.
According to the agency, during 2024, the man created and distributed videos on TikTok with statements that the court considered "justification of Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine." In Ukrainian law, such actions are classified as a criminal offense.
This case is part of a larger trend of increasing responsibility for public statements related to Russia. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian authorities have tightened legislation on collaboration and "justification of aggression." According to human rights organizations, hundreds of citizens have been charged with such charges over the past two years.
At the same time, international observers have expressed concern about the possible violation of freedom of speech in such cases. Human rights activists note that in the absence of direct calls for violence or specific actions in favor of the aggressor, criminal prosecution for statements raises questions about the proportionality of punishment.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine emphasizes that the sentence was handed down in accordance with current legislation, which provides for liability for public denial of armed aggression by Russia. The department also noted that the convicted person had the opportunity to appeal the court's decision.
